Telecom workers suspend strike

The Telecom and IT Professionals Union have temporarily suspended their industrial action commenced yesterday in protest of poor conditions of service.

According to the union, on Monday, March 16, 2021, “the union received a notice from the National Labor Commission, requesting us to stay action on strike and appear before it on Thursday, March 18, 2021”.

In a press release to announce their suspension of industrial action sighted by Original News, they stated that; “in our response to the commission’s notice, we respectfully indicated abide by the commissions directive to stay action till Thursday 18 March 2021 with the conviction that all these long-pending known concerns before the respected commission for the past two years would see its finality come Thursday, 18th March 16, 2021, to guarantee the union cooperates with all stakeholders going forward”.

The union yesterday [Monday, March 15, 2021] said salary negotiations with the management of the four subcontractors who have been engaged by Huawei Technologies Limited to maintain the technical operations of MTN, AirtelTigo, and Vodafone have not yielded fruitful results.

Also accused them of holding back the arbitration award from the National Labor Commission that they were directed to comply with.
