Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, says distinguishing oneself to stand out as a musician is a necessary and important aspect of modern music.
He said branding is pivotal in the music world, therefore, he implored Ghanaian musicians to build a strong brand that can stand the test of time.
In a conversation with North Ridge-based Metropolitan Television (Metro TV), Sam George emphasised on why musicians should strive to be outstanding and work towards carving a niche for themselves.
“Make sensible music, it should also have good content,” he said.
Sam George also stressed that churning out sensible and good songs is crucial and cannot be undermined in music stating that relevant music sells.
The Ningo Prampram lawmaker juxtaposed when Shatta Wale – real name, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Junior, was referred to as Bandana and when he rebranded, observing that it had had a positive impact on his music career.
The legislator, who has always thrown his support for Ghanaian musicians also noted that the ‘Ayoo’ hit singer with the right management was refined to produce standard songs even though when he was in the realm of his own affairs, he couldn’t churn out such songs.
“You know me, I celebrate Shatta [Wale], Stonebwoy but when you do a song and it is all ‘freedom, freedom, freedom, Shatta, Shatta, Shatta’ – I mean… that’s why when he had support from Zylofon Media, you saw what he did with Gringo. Compare Gringo to Freedom and tell me if you don’t see the value of money in the production [He’s] the same artiste [though]. And when Shatta did not understand the business yet and did not see the need for packaging was, and he was Bandana. You saw how he got murdered (sic) by Samani? But when he re-understood, re-evaluated himself and understood the business and branded himself and came back today he’s king. It is the same thing with Stonebwoy.” Sam Nartey George noted.
He added that “ And also in the Gospel music. People forget that Joe Mettle who’s arguing the biggest Gospel musician, if not, the biggest male artiste in Ghana today. He was part of what? Was it Soul Winners or so? So, yes, today where is Soul Winner, Joe Mettle? It is branding and packaging.”
