Joint Police, National Security officers close LGBTQ office in Accra

A joint Police and National Security operation has led to the raid and closure of the recently opened office of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community at Ashongman in Accra.

The raid took place on Wednesday, 24 February 2021.

It follows a complaint by the landlord of the five-bedroom apartment about suspicious activities taking place in the facility.

The joint security team together with the landlord of the residence and the Kwabenya Traditional Council went to the premises of the organization.

According to the landlord, Dr Asenso Gyambibi, he was informed his building is being used for LGBTQ activities by an unidentified person via text.

“So I called the agent and I asked him who rented the house because they have been here for just two months.

“I asked him if he was aware an event of this nature took place here? He said ‘Oh Doc, nothing really it was just a party and fundraiser event we were having and it is all over social media,” Dr Asenso recounted.

He said the use of his facility for LGBTQI activities is in breach of the tenancy agreement because the tenant, one Alex Kofi Donkor, rented the facility under the pretext of using it as an office for a health NGO.
