Judge orders fresh parliamentary elections in Assin North Constituency

A Cape Coast Highcourt has canceled the parliamentary elections in the Assin North constituency in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

The Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye, ordered for fresh elections to be conducted in the constituency.

The court has also restrained the Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson, from holding himself as the MP for the Assin North Constituency.

A resident of Assin North, Michael Ankomah Nimfah, on January 6, 2021, applied for an interlocutory injunction to restrain Mr James Gyakye Quayson from being sworn in and holding himself as MP.

His request was granted by the court but the then MP-elect defied the court orders and went to Parliament to be sworn in as part of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic on January 7, 2021.
Therefore one of the issues to be determined by the court was whether or not the MP qualified to contest the election at the date he filed his nomination because of dual citizenship case, whether he still can hold himself as MP after his swearing-in.

During the ruling today, Wednesday, July 28, 2021, Justice Kwasi Boakye granted all the wish of the petitioner, and ordered for a fresh parliamentary elections in the Assin North Constituency.
