Parliament approves 2021 budget statement and economic policy

The 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic has voted to approve the 2021 budget and economic policy.

In the vote on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 19, the House voted 137 yes and 134 no to adopt the budget for the 2021 fiscal year.

Caretaker Finance Minister, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu presented the budget in Parliament on behalf of the President on Friday, March 12.

Among other things, the government proposed the introduction of a Covid-19 Health Levy of a one percentage point increase in the National Health Insurance Levy and a one percentage point increase in the VAT Flat Rate to support expenditures related to Covid-19.

“To provide the requisite resources to address these challenges and fund these activities, the government is proposing the introduction of a Covid-19 Health Levy of a one percentage point increase in the National Health Insurance Levy and a one percentage point increase in the VAT Flat Rate to support expenditures related to Covid-19.”
