The General Secretary of the National Tenant Union of Ghana, Mr. Frederick Opoku, has described the Rent Control Department of Ghana, as a “toothless bulldog” for its failure to attend to the plight of tenants.
He blamed the inability of the body in charge of monitoring and establishing guidelines to manage the tenant-landlord relationship on the government because it doesn’t provide adequate funds.
Mr. Opoku argues that the government less sourcing the Rent Control Department renders it powerless to carry out its constitutional responsibility.
He posited that constitutional mandate alone without financial muscle to implement the laws is wrong.
“We believe if the Rent Control Department is empowered it will help us [tenants], as I speak, they don’t receive subversion. They have nothing. They are in a financial constraint. They have nothing they are toothless bulldog. They can’t bite, of course,” he said.
He, therefore, called on the government to provide it with the required resources to enable it to discharge its obligations as the constitution demands.
“If you have the mandate and we do not have money to carry out, where are you are going?” he quizzed.
