Speaker threatens to adjourn sitting if House don’t form a quorum

The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has told Members of Parliament he will proceed with the adjournment of the House if they fail to form a quorum.

He made this pronouncement soon after the House had just begun its proceedings of the day and the Member of Parliament for Lawra Constituency, Mr. Bede Ziedeng had raised the Speaker’s attention to the House not forming a quorum.

Mr. Bede Ziedeng stood on order 48 of the standing orders of Parliament, where it states that one-third of the total number of MPs is required before proceedings of House could begin.

Speaker agreed with the concerns raised and assured that, if after 10 minutes, the number of MPs presents so still less than the required number, he would be left with no option than to adjourn the House to tomorrow.

But the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul pleaded with Speaker to allow proceedings to continue since many of the MPs are present but engaged in various committee meetings at Parliament and would soon join the chamber for the day’s proceedings to continue.

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority leader, also sounded the same explanation of the Defence Minister, saying, they are around but engage in Committee meetings working on the various budget appropriations for ministries and agencies.
