The Public Relations Officer for the Rent Control Department of Ghana, Emmanuel Hovey Kporsu, says the regulator lacks the necessary logistics and funds to enable them to play their role as enshrined in the constitution.
Speaking on Original 91.9FM’s Adwenekasa programme Monday, May 17, 2021, Hovey Kporsu indicated that the fund allocated to the Rent Control Department annually is inadequate and that hinders the implementation of the rent control law.
“When it comes to the logistical problem he is on the right point, we need certain things to carry out our constitutional duty. But that doesn’t mean we do not get subversion.. Normally, when we send it based on the availability of funds we are allocated some portion but it is not satisfactory,” he show host, Kwaku Owusu Adjei.
His comments come on the back of claims of the General Secretary of Tenants Union of Ghana, Frederick Opoku that the Rent Control Department is a toothless bulldog arguing they are nonexistent.
According to Mr. Opoku, the government less sourcing the Rent Control Department renders it powerless explaining constitutional mandate alone without financial backing makes their existence irrelevant.
He, therefore, called on the government to provide it with the required resources to enable it to discharge its obligations as the constitution demands.
“We believe if the Rent Control Department is empowered it will help us [tenants], as I speak, they don’t receive subversion. They have nothing. They are in a financial constraint. They have nothing they are toothless bulldog. They can’t bite, of course. If you have the mandate and we do not have money to carry out, where are you are going?” he quizzed.
