Benching Ronaldo against Everton the ‘correct decision’ – Solskjaer

Ronaldo had scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but started as a substitute on Saturday.

Edinson Cavani was handed the job of leading the United line, while the recalled Anthony Martial scored the opening goal as Solskjaer’s side failed to win at home for the second Premier League game in a row.

What has been said?

Solskjaer told reporters: “You make decisions for a long, long season and you have to manage the players’ workload. The decision was, for me, a correct one.

“Anthony Martial came in and did well, scored a good goal. Edinson needed minutes and got an hour, he could have scored.”

More Old Trafford frustration

Fresh from losing 1-0 at home to Aston Villa last weekend, United were again frustrated on home soil after Andros Townsend’s finish from a swift counterattack earned Everton a point.

United boss Solskjaer added: “We did have enough players behind the ball, we made a couple of bad decisions which cost us in those 10 seconds on that counterattack. That is something where we were well enough organised behind the ball but we should have dealt with the danger better.

“Every game is a big game at Man United. We just have to be focused, make sure we use the international break well, us as coaches who are staying at home, come back with energy again, a clear focus, good mindset.

“Today we dominated, we just couldn’t get that second goal we needed. Everton, as we knew from last season, could score from nowhere.”

Man Utd better than in 2020-21

Though United have dropped points for the second consecutive league game, they have still collected four more points from their opening seven games than they did last season.

“I thought it was a very, very good goal [from Martial], a great goal but you are sat here a bit disappointed and deflated. We were in control, we dominated the game, I can’t say total control as we conceded.

“We do face games and opponents more and more that allow us to have more possession. They go away disappointed but we have started better than last season but it is still not what we wanted.”
